Job description

About Cubby

Cubby is the modern property management platform built for self-storage — and one of the most promising vertical technology companies in America. We recently closed a $63M Series A from Goldman Sachs and are scaling rapidly.

Self-storage is a $50B industry and the fastest-growing commercial real estate asset class. Our platform handles everything from payment processing to revenue management for self-storage operators across the country, and we're just getting started. Our goal is to build best-in-class technology. We currently serve over 400 operators with over 500k units under management.

We're a small, high-velocity team that punches way above its weight. If you want to build something meaningful at a company where your work is felt immediately, this is the role.

The Role

Cubby is hiring its first VP of Finance. This is the senior-most finance role in the company, reporting directly to the CEO, with a seat at the leadership table. We need someone who shows up as a business leader first and a finance leader second — someone whose instinct is to build and see around corners, rather than to govern and protect. You'll be a true partner and challenger to the rest of the executive team, with the judgment to shape the big bets and hold the business accountable to them.

You'll own the financial operating backbone: FP&A, accounting, capital strategy, board and investor relations, and the financial systems and controls that support our next phase of growth. You'll also work closely with the CEO on pricing, unit economics, and how we deploy capital as we scale. The rigor is expected. What sets you apart is the ability to translate financial reality into strategic decisions — and to build the infrastructure that makes great decisions repeatable.

What You'll Own

Finance, Planning, and Capital

  • Own the model and the numbers. Build out FP&A, accounting, and financial systems, and give the leadership team and board a clear, current read on the business at all times. Define, track, and communicate the metrics that run the business: ARR, NRR, churn, gross margin, cash flow, and LTV/CAC.
  • Steward capital and lead investor and board relations. Tell the ongoing financial and strategic story, engage our investor network, and represent the finance voice at board meetings. Own the materials, the narrative, and the follow-through.
  • Stand up systems and controls. Put the right oversight, processes, and controls in place to support our growth without creating drag on the business.

Strategy and Leadership

  • Partner with the CEO on the operating plan. Translate company priorities into financial plans, budgets, and targets. Hold the business accountable to them with honest reporting and clear metrics.
  • Lead capital deployment decisions. Bring an independent point of view on resourcing, pricing, and how we invest across the business. You'll be in the room where those calls get made, and we expect you to push back when the math doesn't work.
  • Turn data into direction. Identify what the numbers are actually saying about our business and surface it early, not after it becomes a problem.

Team and Infrastructure

  • Build the finance function. Decide what we hold in-house versus with external partners and when. Sequence the hires, manage any existing finance and accounting staff, and develop the team that runs finance day to day.
  • Set up the tools and systems. Own the financial stack: ERP, FP&A tooling, reporting infrastructure. Build for where we're going, not just where we are.

What We're Looking For

Must-Haves

  • 8+ years in finance, spanning FP&A, financial operations, and/or strategic finance at high-growth B2B software or vertical SaaS companies
  • Direct experience with fundraising, board prep, and investor relations — you've done the work, not just supported someone who did
  • A track record of influencing decisions well beyond finance: pricing, headcount, product investment, go-to-market strategy
  • Experience building or rebuilding financial infrastructure at a growth-stage company (not just maintaining what was handed to you)
  • A bias to build. Your instinct is to create and solve, not only to stabilize and control
  • Comfort operating in ambiguity with high ownership and a short feedback loop

Strong Signals

  • Experience carrying a company from Series A into its growth stage
  • Background in vertical SaaS, proptech, real estate technology, or industries with fragmented, operator-driven customer bases
  • Experience moving a finance function from fractional or outsourced to fully in-house
  • Familiarity with real estate or property management financial models (NOI, occupancy economics, operator-level unit economics)
  • MBA or CPA, though we care more about what you've built than where you studied

Nice to Have

  • Owning operations and people/HR: supporting hiring plans, comp benchmarking, or managing outside HR counsel
  • Experience managing legal and contracts, including working with outside counsel on commercial agreements, employment matters, or corporate governance
  • Comfort being the connective tissue between finance and the rest of the business, not just a finance leader who hands off everything non-finance to someone else

What This Role Is Not

This is not a controller role. We have accounting needs, but we're hiring for strategic horsepower first. If your comfort zone is closing the books and not much else, this isn't the right fit.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive base salary + performance-based bonus
  • Equity in a high-growth company backed by Goldman Sachs
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Hybrid in office (3 days/week) in Flatiron
  • The opportunity to build the finance function from the ground up at a company with real product-market fit and a clear path to scale

How to Apply

If this sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you. Send a note about why you're excited about this role and what you'd prioritize in your first 90 days to get Cubby's financial infrastructure where it needs to be.
