Job description
We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to take ownership of our Medical data pipeline, which ingests, processes, and delivers data from hospital systems into our analytics and workflow tools. This is a mission-critical role with significant growth potential, working directly on infrastructure that supports hospitals, cancer registries, and researchers nationwide.
No prior medical data experience is required — just a willingness to learn quickly. What matters most is how you think about data and the clarity of your thinking. You will collaborate closely with product managers, data engineers, and integration teams to keep our systems scalable, reliable, and easy to maintain.
Our stack: async Python (Mypy, Pytest, Ruff, uv), PostgreSQL and MongoDB, Dagster for orchestration, Rust for performance-critical components, Terraform/Open Tofu, and AWS (ECS/Fargate, RDS, Lambda, S3), with CI/CD through GitHub Actions.
Responsibilities
- Own and maintain the core backend services that pull Medical data from hospital systems and transform it for analytics and research
- Design, develop, and optimize ETL workflows for large healthcare datasets
- Build safe distributed systems: async I/O, rate limiting, retries, and ACID guarantees
- Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code, with strong type-checking, unit and integration testing, and CI/CD practices
- Monitor and improve system performance, reliability, and scalability
- Participate in code reviews (including reviewing AI-assisted code), mentor other engineers, and help shape engineering best practices
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong expertise in Python, including packaging, async programming (asyncio), Mypy, and Pytest
- Strong expertise in SQL (PostgreSQL preferred), including schema design and migrations
- Working experience with MongoDB or another document database
- Experience building, deploying, and maintaining backend services or data pipelines in production
- Solid understanding of Git/GitHub workflows and code review
- Proficiency with Linux command-line tools
- Uses AI coding assistants productively, and knows how to verify their output with types, tests, and CI rather than trusting it
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Rust: part of our hospital data acquisition layer is written in Rust, and we value engineers who have learned it, whether on the job or on their own
- Familiarity with healthcare data standards and EHR integration (e.g., HL7 v2, C-CDA, NAACCR, OMOP, EHR APIs and their backend authorization)
- Workflow orchestration with Dagster or Airflow
- Infrastructure as code (Terraform/OpenTofu) and AWS (ECS/Fargate, RDS, Lambda, S3)
- FastAPI or similar web frameworks
- Experience with pipelines that include LLM or ML steps
- Experience in a regulated environment (HIPAA or similar)
